Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas) -- With the prime construction season beginning to wind down as the fourth quarter approaches, construction starts are also beginning to slow down across the North American landscape. Within the Industrial Manufacturing industry, some $12.7 billion worth of construction starts are currently scheduled for the fourth quarter, down approximately 25% from the third quarters $16 billion in construction starts.
The United States is, of course, the front runner in overall spending for the coming quarter with over $10 billion worth of projects expected to begin construction. Mexico has taken a tentative hold on second place with just over $1.2 billion in proposed project work while Canada brings up the rear this coming quarter at $1.1 billion. In terms of total project numbers, the U.S. will be looking at just under 260 projects that are expected to begin during the fourth quarter while Canada takes over second place at just over 30 projects and Mexico remains in third.
A more detailed look at what regions will play host to the highest amount of project work shows that the Mid Atlantic region in the U.S. is expected to have $4.45 billion worth of projects break ground during the coming quarter. the Southeast region in the U.S. has taken firm old on second place in total dollars to be spent, $2.3 billion, while at the same time also playing host to the largest number of projects at 55. Rounding out the top five spending regions is Mexico, the Midwest region in the U.S. ($1.11 billion) and Ontario, Canada with $1.1 billion.
Some of the major projects that are expected to begin construction in the coming quarter and are driving this spending include the proposed $4 billion Dulles Metrorail corridor project in Virginia, a $1.3 billion grassroot automobile assembly plant in Mississippi, a $1.2 billion grassroot automobile assembly plant in Mexico, a $700 million automobile assembly plant retool in Ontario, Canada, and a $700 million minivan assembly plant retool in Missouri.
While overall construction totals are down in terms of both capital investment and total projects during the coming quarter, $12 billion is still a very healthy spending number for the beginning of winter when many projects are hampered by weather concerns, depending on their location. Coming off the over $30 billion worth of construction starts that took place during the summer, final quarter spending totals of this size will round out a very successful year for the Industrial Manufacturing industry across the North American manufacturing landscape.
