Occidental Begins Construction on Cogen Expansion at Texas Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Occidental Chemical Corporation (Dallas, Texas), a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) (Los Angeles, California), has begun construction on the $45 million cogen expansion at the Battleground Chlorine and Caustic Soda Plant, located in La Porte, Harris County, Texas.

Construction for the project started the third week of June and is scheduled for completion in June 2005. The expansion project will consist of adding a single dual-fueled 80-megawatt GE (NYSE:GE) Power Systems MS7001EA combustion turbine generator and a double-pressure duct-fired Nooter/Eriksen heat recovery steam generator to the existing facility. The combustion turbine for the project came from Occidental’s Deer Park facility, which stopped utilizing the turbine in January 2001. The cogeneration plant at Battleground is currently equipped with two 80-megawatt GE Power Systems MS7001EA combustion turbines, two Volcano heat recovery steam generators and a single 52-megawatt GE Power Systems condensing steam turbine generator, all of which generate a total of 200 megawatts. Once the project is complete, the cogen will operate in a 3-on-1 combined-cycle configuration capable of generating a total of 280 megawatts of power for the plant.

Black & Veatch headquartered in Overland Park, Kansas was awarded both the owners engineering and general construction contract for the project.
