Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As stay-at-home orders ease in parts of the U.S., industrial projects, some delayed or subject to reduced labor availability on site, are returning. During the pandemic, several sectors of the Industrial Manufacturing Industry have been key to people being able to stay at home. These sectors include data centers and the distribution centers and warehousing that provide the goods delivered via e-commerce. Industrial Info is tracking several Industrial Manufacturing project starts that are set to begin this quarter, and the U.S. Southeast, which includes Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Tennessee and Puerto Rico, has a strong backlog, with $2.8 billion in projects planned to kick off in the second quarter.

Data centers are big business throughout the U.S., and the Southeast is no exception. Among the projects set to kick off in the quarter is Facebook Incorporated's (NASDAQ:FB) (Menlo Park, California) planned grassroot data center in Gallatin, Tennessee, about 30 miles northeast of Nashville. The project is part of a larger investment plan and entails constructing two buildings totaling approximately 982,500 square feet with associated infrastructure including a substation. Barge Design Solutions Incorporated (Nashville) and Peoples Associates Structural Engineers (San Jose, California) are engineers on the project, which is expected to be completed by the end of 2021. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) also is constructing a few distribution centers in the region, including two on the outskirts of Orlando, Florida. The fulfillment/distribution center in Apopka will encompass more than 201,000 square feet and is expected to be completed in late summer 2021. Amazon's 202,000-square-foot facility in Groveland also is expected to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Apopka and Groveland facilities.

Automotive projects also can be found in the region, and a lithium-ion battery plant for electric cars helps propel Georgia to the leading position for upcoming project investment in the region. In Commerce, Georgia, about 85 miles northeast of Atlanta, SK Innovation Company Limited (Seoul, South Korea) plans to soon begin construction on a plant that will supply batteries to electric vehicles manufactured by the Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) in Kentucky. Construction on the 1.5 million-square-foot facility is planned to be completed in the first half of 2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

In Smyrna, Tennessee, Topre America Corporation (Smyrna) will begin an expansion of its automotive stamping plant that entails a 47,245-square-foot press shop for Nissan, Honda and Toyota. Brasfield & Gorrie LLC (Birmingham, Alabama) is the general contractor on the project, which is planned to be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

On Florida's west coast, the Manatee County Port Authority (Palmetto, Florida) is gearing up for a set of projects at the port in Palmetto. Berth 4's dock will be extended to increase operations, and berths 6 and 7 will be renovated. In addition, a new intermodal cargo yard will be constructed at the existing facility. The projects are expected to wrap up toward the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's projects reports on the berth extension, renovations and cargo yard construction.
