Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Florida is a busy place for industrial projects, and Industrial Info is tracking approximately $14.6 billion in projects that are under construction. While the state is experiencing a massive buildout of solar power, two natural gas-fired projects that began construction in 2019 contribute largely to the Power Industry's total investment value, while a light rail project helps propel the Industrial Manufacturing into the leading position for overall project value, with more than $9.2 billion worth of projects.

While several solar power projects are active in Florida, two large natural gas-fired projects dominate the state's power sector. NextEra Energy Incorporated (NYSE:NEE) (Juno Beach, Florida) is underway with its Dania Beach Clean Energy Center in Fort Lauderdale. Upon completion, which is planned for the first half of next year, the facility will provide 1,200 megawatts (MW) of power to the region. Black & Veatch Incorporated (Overland Park, Kansas) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services. In NextEra's first-quarter 2021 earnings conference call, company executives said the project was on time and on budget. In Apollo Beach, in the Greater Tampa area, Tampa Electric Company (Tampa) is converting a coal-fired unit to burn natural gas. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), the Big Bend Power Plant contains four coal-fired units constructed between 1970 and 1985 and a dual-fuel unit (Unit 5), constructed in 2009, which is capable of consuming natural gas or fuel oil. The conversion is occurring for Unit 1, which will result in 1,090 MW of gas-fired generation. Kiewit Engineering Group Incorporated is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to be completed in late 2022 or early 2023. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Taking the role of largest single project under construction in the state is Phase II of Brightline Trains LLC's (Miami, Florida) light rail extension from West Palm Beach to the Orlando International Airport. The project, which kicked off in 2019, requires more than 100 miles of new track and, according to Florida Today, includes 48 bridges and upgrades at 155 rail crossings. The project celebrated 50% completion in May and is expected to be in operation by the end of next year. Several projects also are underway at the state's ports and harbors, including cruise ship terminal expansions in Cape Canaveral and Miami. The Port of Miami began its Phase V expansion earlier this year, which entails a new state-of-art cruise terminal with a new bulkhead and apron, landside improvements and vessel-provisioning facilities. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The Cape Canaveral project is part of a $2.5 billion investment to expand and overhaul the port, which includes a new 185,000-square-foot cruise ship terminal to serve two ships, along with site work and utilities to increase passenger capacity. Construction began in the summer of 2019 and is expected to be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Seemingly no U.S. state is untouched by Amazon.com Incorporated's (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington) massive buildout, and Industrial Info is tracking 15 Amazon projects that are underway in Florida. Among these is an approximately 1.1 million-square-foot grassroot distribution center in Homestead, Florida, south of Miami. The facility will include 95 loading docks and 200 trailer stalls. Miller Construction Company (Fort Lauderdale) is the general contractor on the project, which kicked off earlier this year and is expected to be completed in early 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
