Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Bureau of Ocean Energy Management recently extended the 30-day public comment period to July 13 for the environmental assessment of a proposed wind power lease area in waters offshore New York. The public comment period for the 81,130-acre area off of Long Island was extended due to requests from stakeholders and will be used to determine whether to issue a Finding of No Significant Impact or continue additional analysis.

Additionally, a coalition of 60 environmental, civic and business organizations in New York submitted a letter to Governor Andrew Cuomo calling for the development of 5,000 megawatts (MW) of large-scale offshore wind in order to initiate a new clean energy industry in the state.

Currently, Industrial Info is tracking 14 offshore renewable wind generation projects along the Atlantic coast valued at over $22 billion.

The Cape Wind Associates LLC (Boston, Massachusetts) wind project off the coast of Massachusetts, which has been under development since 2001, recently suffered a setback after a D.C court of appeals overturned two government approvals for the project, citing the lack of geological, geophysical and geotechnical data on the lease area sea floor. The 468-MW project extended the timeline to begin construction by two years in order to obtain the remaining approvals and project financing. For related information, see April 12, 2016, article -- Study: Offshore Wind Power Could Surge if Massachusetts Makes a Big Commitment.

Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (Democrat-Rhode Island) and Edward Markey (Democrat-Massachusetts) recently proposed legislation to extend the 30% investment tax credit (ITC) through 2025 in hopes of spurring growth in the offshore wind energy industry.

The 30-MW Block Island offshore wind project, which is being developed by Deepwater Wind LLC (Providence, Rhode Island) off the coast of Rhode Island, is expected to become operational by October and will be the first commercial offshore wind project in the U.S.

After the completion of the Block Island project, the offshore wind development market could start to move forward, according to the recently concluded US Offshore Wind Leadership Conference in Boston. With the enormous potential of wind energy off the Atlantic coast and the significant investment in pipeline infrastructure required to provide fuel to conventional large natural gas power plants, this mature renewable technology is now ready to be a vital part of the clean energy economy.
