Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Led by the Rocky Mountains market region, the United States could see as much as $7.83 billion in power Transmission and Distribution (T&D) projects kick off construction in the second half of 2018, according to Industrial Info's project database. For the same period, Industrial Info is tracking $2.67 billion in U.S. T&D project completions, led by the Great Lakes region.

Not all of the projects are likely to kick off or see completion during this period. Industrial Info assesses all projects as having a high, medium or low likelihood of moving forward as planned.

The Rocky Mountains region, which includes New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming, is home to nearly $3.3 billion in potential T&D project kickoffs from July through December.

Near Clovis in east New Mexico, construction of the long-awaited $1.9 billion Phase I of the Tres Amigas Super Substation is expected to kick off by the end of this year. The project includes a 5-gigawatt, high-voltage, direct-current-to-alternating-current substation and interconnections with the Western, Eastern and potentially the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grids to improve the transmission of renewable power in the U.S.

Under development by Tres Amigas LLC (Santa Fe, New Mexico), the project is envisioned to break the transmission bottlenecks that exist for renewable power in the U.S. However, the road to the supergrid has been a long and winding one, as the Tres Amigas developers have struggled to secure financing in past years, according to news media accounts. As such, planned construction of the project has slipped 74 months from the originally planned start date, according to Industrial Info's project report. If all goes as planned, the project could be completed in mid-2021.

To the west, the $437.9 million Willow-Pinal Central Transmission Line (SunZia Southwest Transmission Line Project) in Arizona is in the planning stage, with a kickoff planned for late 2018 and completion in early 2021. Like the Tres Amigas project in New Mexico, SunZia is aimed at helping to meet demand for renewable energy in the Southwest, consisting of two parallel single-circuit 500-kilovolt lines across two planned substations in southeast Arizona. Ultimately, the project would run more than 500 miles through both Arizona and New Mexico, according to its developers, Southwestern Power Group II LLC (Phoenix, Arizona). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

T&D Completions
The Great Lakes region, which includes Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin, stands head and shoulders above the rest of the U.S. market regions, with more than $1 billion in planned T&D completions planned for the second half of this year.

In Wisconsin, the $580 million, 345-kilovolt Badger-Coulee Transmission Line is planned for completion by the end of this year. The 180-mile, overhead high-voltage line is a joint project by American Transmission Company, LLC (Waukesha, Wisconsin) and Xcel Energy Incorporated (NASDAQ:XEL) (Minneapolis, Minnesota). The line is aimed at improving system reliability and increasing access to renewable energy in Wisconsin, according to the developers.

In late May, a Wisconsin state appeals court upheld the state's Public Services Commission's approval of the line. The project had been challenged by the Town of Holland, which claimed the commission did not follow state laws when evaluating the transmission line, according to Wisconsin Public Radio. The town board may decide this month on whether to appeal the court decision. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
