Saudi Aramco, Total Award Front-End Engineering Design for $6 Billion Grassroot Refinery in Saudi Arabia

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Saudi Aramco and Total have selected Foster Wheeler (Houston, Texas) and Technip Italy (Roma, Italy) to perform front-end engineering design for new units installed at a proposed 400,000-barrel-per-day (BPD) refinery to be constructed in Al Jubail, Saudi Arabia. The refinery is expected to begin construction in early 2009 and start up by 2012. Saudi Aramco plans to award an engineering and construction contract by mid-2008 for engineering, procurement and construction services for the grassroot refinery.

The refinery is proposed to have two 200,000 BPD crude units, 100,000 BPD delayed coker, 59,000 BPD vacuum gas oil hydrocracker, 59,000 BPD heavy coker gas oil hydrocracker, 32,700 BPD fluid catalytic cracker unit, 30,000 BPD to 50,000 BPD gas oil hydrotreater, 30,000 BPD to 50,000 BPD diesel hydrotreater, 30,000 to 50,000 BPD kerosene hydrotreater, 30,000 to 50,000 BPD hydrotreater, hydrogen plant, and supporting offsite utilities. Foster Wheeler is doing design work for a proposed 100,000 BPD delayed coker unit utilizing Foster Wheeler technology. Technip Italy is doing process design for many of the other new units. The other companies involved providing technologies are UOP, Axens, Chevron and KTI.

Saudi Aramco has five domestic refineries in Riyadh, Ras Tanura, Rabigh, Yanbu and Jiddah that have a combined capacity of approximately 1.4 million barrels per day. The company's two domestic joint-venture refineries, with ExxonMobil in Yanbu and Shell in Jubail, bring in-kingdom refining capacity to more than 1.9 million BPD. Saudi Aramco explores for and produces crude oil and natural gas. It manufactures a wide range of petroleum products from oil and gas. It markets crude oil, gas and petroleum products domestically and internationally.
