Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Renewable and green-manufacturing technology company SBI BioEnergy Incorporated (Edmonton, Alberta) is building a new biofuel pilot plant in Edmonton.
After working for eight years on its technology platform for converting vegetable oils, animal fats, tall oil, and pulp and paper by-products into renewable biodiesel, the company is scaling up production from skid-mounted, bench-concept technology to a 10 million-liter-per-year mini-refinery to produce renewable diesel and jet fuel.
The estimated C$10 million ($7.64 million) mini-refinery will utilize SBI BioEnergy's proprietary Process Intensification and Continuous Flow-Through Reaction (PICFTR) technology, used in the Pharmaceutical Industry, for the production of various biofuels.
Plans involve installing two of the PICFTR reactor trains to demonstrate the technology has potential for full commercial-scale production. The mini-refinery will process 30 tons per day of feedstock through a pre-treatment system, reaction train and a fractionation distillation system that will produce high-purity, high-performance renewable fuels manufactured through an environmentally friendly proprietary process technology.
Cormode & Dickson Construction Limited (Edmonton) is constructing the production building, and SBI will oversee the installation of the process equipment and start-up of the facility. Construction is expected to be completed in the South Common area of the Edmonton Research Park behind 91st Street, by the second quarter of 2016.
Upon successful operations of the mini-refinery, future plans include enticing partners to invest in a full-scale commercial production facility of 240 million liters that could begin construction as early as 2017.
