Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In November 2008, Spanish engineering company Grupo Sener (Vizcaya, Spain) started the construction of Solar Tres, a solar-tower power plant with the first molten-salt central receiver and heat-storage plant in the world. The plant, located in Fuentes de Andalucia, has a total investment value of $250 million and a total power output of 17 megawatts. According to Sener's authorities, the site enjoys one of the highest solar-radiation levels in Spain.
Sener has been planning Solar Tres Power Station since 2001. The project consists of a facility with 2,590 glass-metal heliostat mirrors that will capture the sunlight, reflecting it to a receiver in a 120-meter-high tower. Instead of thermo oil, the facility will use molten salt, which can be stored in the molten state and be used at any time, as working fluid. The molten-salt central receiver of high thermal efficiency is able to operate at high fluxes for at least 25 years. The plant will be able to operate 24 hours a day during the summer.
Siemens Energy (Erlangen, Germany), a subsidiary of Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) and a leading global provider of products, services and solutions for power generation, transmission and distribution, announced that it will supply an industrial steam turbine that is specially modified to meet solar technology requirements at the Solar Tres Power Station.
Grupo Sener is devoted to the engineering, power, environmental and aerospace industries. In the power industry, the company develops industrial projects based on renewable energy and waste recovery and recycling.
