Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--German wind turbine manufacturer Senvion SE (FWB:RPW) (Hamburg, Germany) has landed its first contract in Norway to supply turbines for the Egersund windfarm.
The company has been contracted to supply 33 of its 3.4M114 model turbines, rated at 3.4 megawatts (MW) each, for the 112-MW project located on the North Sea coast of Norway, between Kristiansand and Stavanger. When commissioned in the middle of next year, the windfarm will be capable of supplying enough power for approximately 73,000 homes. Project developer Norsk Vind Egersund AS said the project will be able to supply nearly half the homes in the Norwegian province of Rogaland.
Jürgen Geissinger, chief executive officer of Senvion, said: "The contract for Egersund wind farm is a milestone which reflects the clear global growth strategy of Senvion and its potential to enter new markets. In 2016, six years after introducing the first 3.XM turbine to the market, Senvion has a track record of 765 Senvion 3.XM wind energy turbines which amounts to 2.5 gigawatts (GW) installed of this product type alone."
Earlier this month, Senvion SE (FWB:RPW) (Hamburg, Germany)--formerly known as REpower Systems--clinched a 203-MW turbine contract for the Trianel Windpark Borkum II project in the German North Sea. Using its 6-MW models, it will be capable of powering around 210,000 households annually. For additional information, see October 4, 2016, article--Senvion Wins German Offshore Wind Turbine Contract.
Norway, despite being one of the world's largest suppliers of oil and gas, gets almost all of its electricity from hydropower. It has ambitious plans to triple its current wind power capacity from around 700 MW in 2013 to more than 2,000 MW by 2020. In February, Industrial Info reported that Norway would be home to Europe's largest onshore windfarm project following the announcement of a 1.1 billion euro ($1.2 billion) investment plan by state-owned Statkraft AS (Oslo, Norway). The project will see the construction of a network of six windfarms located on the Fosen peninsula, the island of Hitra and in Snillfjord in central Norway, with a combined generating capacity of over 1,000 MW, more than Norway's combined wind capacity today.
