Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Shell Nederland BV (The Hague, Netherlands), part of Royal Dutch Shell plc (NYSE:RDS.A) (The Hague) has awarded CBI Lummus (The Hague) to perform engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) services on a 40,000-50,000-barrel-per-day diesel hydrotreater at the Pernis refinery in Rotterdam. The new unit will reduce the amount of sulfur content in diesel fuels, meeting European environmental specifications and also meeting the demand for refined diesel products. In addition, the refinery will increase capacity of existing sulfur-recovery units to support the diesel project.
Construction is planned to begin in early 2010 and be complete in late 2011. Shell has chosen the Leiden, Netherlands, branch of Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Pasadena, California) to perform engineering, procurement, and construction services for the sulfur expansion.
Shell employs about 102,000 people in more than 100 countries and territories. The company earned a total of $26.5 billion by the end of 2008. Exploration & Production earnings were $20.2 billion, which was 38% higher than 2007 and 39% higher than in 2006. Earnings in 2008 reflected the impact of higher oil and gas prices, which were partly offset by lower production volumes, higher exploration expenses and higher taxes and royalties.
