Shell to Sell Residential Renewable Energy in Texas

Reports related to this article:

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Shell plc (NYSE:SHEL) on Tuesday announced it will begin selling renewable electricity to residential customers in Texas through a new business unit, Shell Energy, as the oil and gas major seeks to enter the U.S. residential power market and reach its net-zero goal by 2050.

Shell Energy also will offer Texans plans for electric vehicle (EV) charging--which will include free charging during off-peak hours and a fixed electricity rate--and a solar buyback plan, so customers can get credit for excess solar power that is exported to the power grid.

Industrial Info is tracking more than $1 billion in U.S. power projects attributed to Shell, its subsidiaries and partners that have a medium-to-high (70-99%) probability of moving forward as planned, with solar accounting for nearly the entire spend.

Shell's U.S. solar partner Silicon Ranch Corporation (Nashville, Tennessee), is at work on a 106-megawatt (MW) solar farm in Bluffton, Georgia, in Clay County. The completion is expected in March 2023. Subscribers can click here for the detailed project report.

Silicon Ranch and Shell also are planning a solar-plus-storage project in Logan County, Kentucky, which is expected to kick off in September. The 145-MW, $180 million solar plant will provide power for Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Incorporated's (NASDAQ:FB) (Menlo Park, California) regional data center operations, according to the Silicon Ranch website. The solar facility will feature a 120-MW battery energy storage system (BESS). The projects are expected to be completed in fourth-quarter 2023. Subscribers can see detailed reports on the solar plant and BESS projects.

Late last year, Shell acquired Savion LLC (Kansas City, Missouri), a large, utility-scale solar and energy-storage developer in the U.S. Savion has 19.6 gigawatts (GW) worth of solar and energy-storage projects in development across 27 states, according to the Savion website.

In terms of wind power projects, Shell subsidiary Shell WindEnergy Incorporated (Houston) plans to repower the 160-MW Brazos windfarm in Fluvanna, Texas, southeast of Lubbock. The site can provide enough power for about 48,000 homes, according to the Shell website. Kickoff is expected in June 2023.

In its May Short-Term Energy Outlook (STEO), the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) forecasted renewable energy sources will account for 22% of total U.S. electricity generation this year and 23% in 2023, up from 20% in 2021.
