Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Engineering conglomerate Siemens AG (NYSE:SI) (Munich, Germany) won an order from Cengiz Enerji (Ankara, Turkey) for a 600-megawatt (MW), gas-fired power plant that will be located in Samsun, Turkey. According to a statement from the company, the $392 million power plant order also covers a 16-year maintenance agreement.

After commissioning at the beginning of 2015, the plant will be the most efficient and most environmentally friendly gas-fired power station in Turkey.

"Siemens makes 30% of the Turkish electricty infrastructure," said Siemens Turkey CEO Huseyin Gelis in a statement. "We are pleased that our pioneering technology will make a significant contribution to a reliable, affordable and environmentally sound energy supply."

Cengiz Enerji is a subsidary of Cengiz Insaat (Ankara). In December, the company, with partners Limak and Kolin Insaat, gave the higest bid for Turkey's biggest energy grid, Bogazici Elektrik Dagitim AS (BEDAS) (Istanbul, Turkey). The consortium gave $1.96 billion for BEDAS, which is currently servicing 4.1 billion subscribers in the European side of Istanbul. Turkey's energy demand is growing continuously. The annual average rate of increase for electric energy consumption for many years has been 8%. The Turkish power plant market is developing dynamically and is subject to stiff competition.

Turkey generates 41.4% of its electricity from natural gas-powered plants; 27.4% from coal-powered plants; and 25.9% from hydroelectric plants. Turkey's total electricity generation capacity is 55,875 MW.
