Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Skanska AB (Stockholm, Sweden), a multinational construction and development company with offices in the U.S., U.K., Scandinavia and Eastern Europe, is at work on roughly $12.27 billion in active projects in a variety of industries, according to Industrial Info's project database. More than $4 billion worth are expected to finish construction this year, about half of which are to be found in the U.S.

The single largest project involving Skanska's U.S. subsidiary that is set to wrap up this year is Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated's (Silver Springs, Maryland) $900 million Valley Energy Center in Middletown, New York, which began construction in early 2016. The natural gas-fired, combined-cycle (NGCC) plant will use two combustion turbines, each with a capacity of 209 megawatts (MW), and a 214-MW steam turbine from Siemens to generate 650 MW.

Last month, New York's power grid operator said in a report that the Valley Energy Center and two other NGCC facilities should provide the state with enough electricity to make up for the closures of two reactors at the Indian Point nuclear power plant, which are slated for 2020 and 2021, according to Reuters. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

But the industry with the largest investment value for projects involving Skanska that are set to be completed in the coming year is the Pharmaceutical & Biotech Industry, which alone accounts for 37% of the $4 billion-plus total. Slightly less than half is attributed to U.S.-based projects, including GlaxoSmithKline Incorporated's (NYSE:GSK) (Brentford, England) $250 million accommodation and renovation of "Smart Labs" in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. GlaxoSmithKline expects the newly designed accommodations to give scientists and other professionals more room to research and develop novel therapeutics. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Also under construction is the University of Washington's $160 million addition to the College of Arts & Sciences' Life Sciences Complex in Seattle, Washington. The facility is expected to support programs for biology, botany and other areas of study and will feature as many as 22 research labs, offices, conference spaces, research and teaching laboratories for undergraduates and imaging facilities. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Skanska USA Building Incorporated also is at work on a major project for Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington): a $185 million fulfillment center in Portland, Oregon. The 918,400-square-foot complex is to be built in the Rivergate Industrial District and will accommodate larger products sold by Amazon, such as sports equipment, gardening tools and pet food, according to The Oregonian. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Much later this year, a joint venture between Skanska and Posillico Incorporated (Farmingdale, New York) is scheduled to finish work on Long Island Railroad's (Jamaica, New York) $297 million Phase II double-track project in Queens, New York. The project is expected to add a 7.4-mile mainline track and five stations to relieve the strain on the existing line. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Skanska has $3.63 billion in active projects in its home country of Sweden, including $1.3 billion that are set to finish construction this year. The largest is Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget's (SCA) $903 million Ostrand Pulp Mill expansion in Sundsvall, Sweden, which began construction in early 2016. The additions include a fiber line, cooking plant, evaporation plant, pulp dryer and wood-yard equipment that will increase production from 660,000 tonnes to 1.1 million tonnes per year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
