SE Green Energy's Hwaseong fuel cell power plant, located at a waste plastic recycling plant site in Nojin-ri, Jangan-myeon, Hwaseong-si, Gyeonggi-do, began operations on June 1, according to the company. The 19.8-megawatt (MW), solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) facility is the largest of its kind in South Korea.
SE Green Energy is a special-purpose corporation (SPC) jointly owned by Korea South-East Power and SK E&C, with equity investments of 23.23 billion won (US$19.4 million) (84.8%) and SK E&C 4.81 billion won (US$4 million) (15.2%), respectively.
SK E&C will operate the facility until May 2040.
Development of the power plant was temporarily suspended earlier this year due to opposition by local residents.
A representative of SE Green Energy said, "The Hwaseong fuel cell power generation facility is already the first domestic SOFC type large-capacity fuel cell power generation business, and it has already received a lot of attention from domestic and foreign officials. Of course, we will make it a best practice as a regional win-win cooperation model."
Fuel cells are considered to be an eco-friendly energy source that can be installed in urban areas because they produce less pollution and are less noisy than other renewable energy plants.
