Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--Leading Indian wind turbine-maker Suzlon Energy Limited's (BSE:532667) (SEL) (Pune, India) S88 series wind turbines will power Indian Oil Corporation's (BSE:530965) (IOCL) (New Delhi, India) 48.3-megawatt (MW) Vajrakarur windfarm. A total of 23 Wind Turbine Generator (WTG) sets of 2.1 MW each will be installed at the windfarm, which is scheduled to commence operations in mid-2012.
In August 2011, Suzlon bagged the contract to set up, operate and maintain the windfarm, which is being developed at Vajrakarur, in the Anantapur district of Andhra Pradesh.
This is the second WTG order received by Suzlon from IOCL. The corporation's maiden wind power project, located in the Kutch district of Gujarat, also was built by Suzlon. The 21-MW windfarm was brought online in January 2009. The windfarm consists of 14 wind turbine generators with rated capacities of 1,500 kilowatts each. This project is considered to be one of the quickest commissioned large-size wind projects in the country.
The S88 wind turbines, supplied by Suzlon for the Vajrakarur windfarm, are suitable for a medium-speed wind region. These turbines can withstand extreme conditions and can operate effectively with lower maintenance costs.
The Suzlon Group is ranked as the world's fifth-largest wind turbine supplier in cumulative installed capacity. The company's global spread extends across Asia, Australia, Europe, Africa, and North and South America, with more than 17,000 MW of wind energy capacity installed in 28 countries, and operations across 32 countries with revenues of approximately $4 billion.
The Suzlon Group offers product portfolios, ranging from sub-megawatt on-shore turbines at 600 kilowatts (KW), to the world's largest commercial 6.15-MW offshore turbines. The group comprises of Suzlon Energy Limited and its subsidiaries, including REpower Systems SE (Hamburg, Germany), in which the company currently holds an approximately 95% share.
