The Datong Tashan Pithead Power Plant is located at Yulin Village, Kouquan Xiang, in the South Suburban District of Datong City. One of the largest pithead power plants in China, the power plant is jointly invested by Datong Coal Mining Group Company Limited (Datong, Shanxi) and Datang International Power Generation Company Limited (SH:601991) (Beijing). Currently, there are two 600-MW subcritical units that were commissioned in July and October 2008.

The Phase II Expansion Project will be furnished with two 660-MW, supercritical, air-cooling, coal-fired units, together with complete set of environmental protection facilities, including flue gas desulfurization devices, low-NOx burners, high-efficiency, electrostatic dust-removing devices, and denitration devices based on selective catalyst reduction (SCR) technology.

North China Power Engineering Company Limited (Beijing) is responsible for the engineering and survey of the project. The three main turbine, generator and boiler equipment supply contracts for the project had been awarded to Harbin Turbine Company Limited (Harbin, Heilongjiang), Harbin Electric Machinery Company Limited (Harbin) and Harbin Boiler Company Limited (Harbin), the three subsidiaries of Harbin Electric Corporation (Harbin) in March 2013.

According to the schedule, construction of the project is expected to kick off in September 2013, and the first unit (Unit 3) is expected to begin operations in June 2015 after a construction period of 21 months.
