Released Thursday, November 20, 2003

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated). Target Corporation (Minneapolis, Minnesota), the nation's second largest general merchandiser, is taking over construction for K-Mart in building a distribution center (PEC 14002547) located in Montgomery County, in Amsterdam, New York. Target has signed an agreement with K-Mart to purchase the Montgomery County property. The agreement is subject to approval of the court handling K-Mart's bankruptcy proceedings. In the process of filing for bankruptcy, K-Mart stopped construction on the project and decided to sell the new facility.

Located off Route 5S, Target purchased the future 1.4 million square foot distribution center, which was originally being constructed for K-Mart and announced its intention to complete construction. Construction should start in December 2003. The new center is expected to open in June of 2005. 650 jobs are expected to be created and eventually increase to 950 jobs as the company expands.

Target Corporation, headquartered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, operates about 1,500 stores in 47 states in three formats: Target, a discount chain with more than 1,100 stores; Mervyn's midrange department stores, found mainly in the Midwest and West; and Marshall Field's upscale department stores in the Midwest. Target, Super Target and Target Greatland, account for more than 80% of Target Corporation's annual sales. In 2002, the company made more than $40 billion in sales. The company currently has about 306,000 employees.

In 2000, Target opened a distribution center in Wilton, New York (Plant 1054220). Both centers are expected to increase sales production in New York.
