Three Large Coal Bases Planned for Northeastern China in the Next Three Years

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Northeastern China's Jilin Province will build three 10 million-metric-ton coal-production bases from 2008 to 2010, Wu Zuji, Vice Governor of Jilin Province, said at the Jilin Provincial Working Conference of Coal Industry and Mining Safety on January 22, 2008, in Changchun.

In 2007, the accumulated coal-production output reached 30.013 million metric tons, surpassing the 30 million for the first time, and the gross production value of the coal industry reached $400 million in Jilin.

In order to achieve safety goals, Jilin terminated 214 coal mines with annual production capacities of less than 30,000 metric tons, and the number of accidents decreased in 2007, said Zhao Quanzhou, Director of the Coal Administration of Jilin Province. The province had spent $76.7 million to improve safety in 2007.

Despite growth in coal production in recent years, the province is still short in supply because of the strong growth in demand, Wang Zuji said. To secure the province's energy supply, the province plans to build three 10 million-metric-ton coal-production bases in Changchun, Baishan and Yanbian by 2010.

Because of the rising coal price, small coal mines are still highly profitable. However, the province will work to close more small coal mines and accelerate the integration of coal resources in 2008, Wang Zuji said.

According to government plans, the number of small coal mines will be reduced to about 200 by the end of 2010, meaning 111 will need to be shut down in the next three years. In addition, various coal mines in the province will be required to adopt normal wall-type coal cutting by the end of this year.
