The company plans to construct a 250,000-square-foot building on a 40-acre site to manufacture wind turbine blades. The blades, weighing as much as 20,000 pounds, are as long as 150 feet, or half the length of a football field. The company expects to finalize a site by August, with the selection of a general contractor thereafter. Construction is anticipated to begin in November, with overall completion slated for the summer of 2011. For the new Sioux City project, TPI is anticipating a joint venture with a different turbine manufacturer, which has not been publicly identified. Approximately 500 jobs will be created.
TPI Composites, founded in 1968 as Tillotson-Pearson Incorporated, is a leading provider of composite wind blades to major turbine manufactures serving the wind energy market. They supply composite blades for two of the industry's largest wind turbine manufacturers: General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) and Mitsubishi Power Systems Incorporated (Lake Mary, Florida). The company opened plants in Newton, Iowa, and Tacicang, China, in 2008 and tripled capacity at its factory in Juarez, Mexico. TPI also has a plant in Warren, Rhode Island.
