Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Capital and maintenance expenditures in the state of Georgia have been slumping within the Industrial Manufacturing Industry in recent years. Since 2000, the state has been averaging just under $500 million worth of expenditures within the industry on an annual basis. All this has now changed as future planned expenditures for Georgia are booming. This boom in spending is being driven by a trio of transportation-related projects that account for $4.1 billion of the over $4.8 billion worth of future expenditures currently planned in the state for the Industrial Manufacturing Industry.
Tops on this list of three projects that are driving future state spending is the proposed $1.9 billion high-speed MAGLEV rail project being planned by the Georgia Department of Transportation. This project is still in the relatively early planning stages with actual construction not anticipated to begin until early 2008.
Second within our trio is the recently proposed $1.2 billion grassroot assembly plant planned by KIA Motors Corporation (Seoul, South Korea). This project is moving along rapidly with site work expected to begin this summer. And finally, third on the list is the proposed $1 billion grassroot inner loop commuter rail line. This MARTA (Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority) (Atlanta, Georgia) run project is continuing with the alternative analysis phase of development before they begin the draft of the environmental impact statement later this year.
These three major projects, combined with the 80 some odd additional projects ranging in size from $1 million up to $127 million that are currently being planned for the future in Georgia, are a good sign that expansions and maintenance projects are booming in the state within the Industrial Manufacturing Industry. In addition to the transportation industry, a number of regional distribution facilities are in the planning or construction stages in the state and a major jet airplane manufacturer, as well as a plastic film & sheet manufacturer are also investing heavily in Georgia. When you look at all of this planned future work, the state appears to have recovered nicely from recent spending woes. Hopefully, this trend will continue and expenditures will grow each year from here on out.
