Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Driven by infrastructure development and economic expansion, Tunisia has launched a program to upgrade its old cement factories and construct new plants. This will increase production capacity to meet a 9% annual growth in local demand and to export the surplus to Europe.
Ciments de Bizerte is a Tunisian company specializing in the production of cement and lime. It has awarded a contract to Polysius SAS (Guilibert de la Lauzière, France), which is working with ThyssenKrupp (ETR:TKA) (Essen, Germany) to upgrade its second clinker production line. The upgrading will result in a high-tech, environmentally friendly plant that will utilize innovative techniques for saving energy, according to a statement the firm made to the Tunis stock exchange.
The upgrading project is expected to be completed in mid-2013, following the signing of the contract in the last week of December 2010.
Polysius SAS France has experience in the Tunisian cement market, as it has constructed a new turnkey line for Société Tuniso-Andalouse de Ciment Blanc in Feriana, West Tunisia. The line comprises a raw grinding plant; a kiln line with Dopol '90, Prepol-AS precalciner processes; a rotary kiln; a twin cooler with a rotary cooler; a roll crusher and Polytrack conveyor; and a cement-grinding plant. The line production startup was in September 2009.
In accordance with the country's energy-saving targets, some cement plants established petcoke-grinding units. The Bizerte cement works uses heavy fuel oil and is presently installing a petcoke and coal-grinding unit.
The cement industry in Tunisia has a long history. The first factory, Les Ciments Artificiels Tunisiens, was established in the southern suburb of the capital Tunis in 1936. The second factory, Les Ciments de Bizerte, was established in the region of Bizerte in 1953.
