Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Turkmenistan is placing power generation projects on the fast track as it rushes to meet the growing needs of industrial expansion and domestic consumer consumption.
General Electric (NYSE:GE) (GE) plans to supply nine aeroderivative turbines in its LM6000 range to the Turkish engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) company Calik Enerj, which is constructing three power plants at Akhal, Mary and Lebap for a 360-megawatt (MW) project scheduled for completion by early 2014.
The $250 million Akhal plant, near the country's capital Ashgabat, will utilize two LM6000-PF units and one LM6000-PC unit. The $145 million Mary plant will have three LM6000-PC units, while Lebap will have three LM6000-PF units.
Both parties involved in the turbine supply deal pointed to the benefits of the operational flexibility and fast-start capabilities of the GE turbines.
Turkmenistan has a current installed power generation capacity of 4,151 MW, of which 43.2% is sourced from gas turbines. There are plans to add 1,496 MW before 2030 from four gas turbine-powered, combined-cycle plants.
