Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). The University of Georgia (Athens, Georgia) is currently studying options for a $25 million boiler addition to its steam plant. The existing steam plant operates three natural gas-fired and one coal-fired boiler, totaling 380,000 lbs/hr steam capacity. These boilers are currently heating most of the campus, which is constantly growing, and thus more capacity is anticipated for the new and future buildings to come.
Current studies include the installation of a coal-fired boiler of between 80,000 lbs/hr to 150,000 lbs/hr capacity and install supporting equipment to increase the university's steam capacity. Approval for the overall project is not expected until the spring of 2006. Construction is anticipated for the spring of 2007, with overall completion slated for the early summer of 2008.
The University of Georgia was founded in 1785 by the Georgia General Assembly and is the first state-chartered university in America. It is located in Clark County, Georgia, about sixty miles northeast of downtown Atlanta. The main campus includes 372 buildings on 614 acres. Total enrollment, including undergraduate, graduate, professional, and independent study, is around 33,405 students. The university's annual budget for the fiscal year 2004 was $1.2 billion. In 2004, the university's research income included $159.9 million and expenditure $313.1 million.
