Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The University of Wisconsin-Madison is accepting bids for an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor for a planned $250 million biomass addition to the university's Charter Street Heating Plant in Madison, Wisconsin.
The university plans to renovate and expand the existing heating plant by commissioning coal-fired boiler units 1-4 and adding a 350,000-pounds-per-hour Vibrating Stoke Boiler, which will have the capacity to burn biomass and natural gas with back-up oil-firing capabilities. The expansion also will include the addition of an on-site biomass fuel receiving and storage system, along with an off-site rail-delivery system adjacent to the site; the addition of two natural-gas package boilers that will produce 225,000 pounds-per-hour of steam at 600 pounds per square inch, which will be fired by natural and backup oil-firing capacity; and the addition of a nominal 22-megawatt (MW) steam-turbine electric generator that will lower the steam pressure to the mid-pressure header (175 pounds per square inch gauge) and the low pressure (10-15 pounds per square inch gauge) system. An EPC contractor is expected to be selected by the end of April or early May. Construction is set to begin this summer, with overall completion set for the spring of 2012.
Potter Lawson Incorporated (Madison) and Power Engineers Collaborative LLC (Brookfield, Wisconsin) were selected to provide architectural and engineering services for the addition.
The University of Wisconsin-Madison, founded in 1848, is a public research university. Located on 933 acres, the university currently has an endowment fund estimated at $1.3 billion, and approximately 2,054 faculty and 42,099 students.
