Uruguay's UTE Doubles Capacity of 10-Megawatt Caracoles Windfarm

Eduinter (Madrid, Spain), which won the engineering, procurement and construction contract for the project, installed the first five 2-megawatt (MW), 67-meter-tall Vestas V80 turbines, totaling a power output of 10 MW. Five new 2-MW turbines of the same manufacturer have arrived at the site, and will double the capacity of the park to 20 MW.

With a total cost of $25 million, the new phase is expected to become operational in April 2010.

In an effort to reduce the country's dependence on fossil fuels and on power and fuel imports, Uruguay's strategic plan aims to have 300 MW of installed wind capacity in 2011, and to reach 500 MW in 2015.

UTE recently announced the launch of a tender for 150 MW of new wind capacity in Uruguay. The terms of the tender promotes the generation of 150 MW produced in power facilities with capacities between 30 and 50 MW.
