As the world increasingly turns online for shopping, education and socializing, data centers are becoming more important. Several of these facilities are being constructed or expanded in the Mid-Atlantic region, notably around the Washington, D.C., area. One example is CloudHQ LLC's (Washington, D.C.) Phase I construction of a data center campus in Ashburn, Virginia, on the northwest outskirts of the Washington metropolitan area. This first phase of construction involves building a 535,000-square-foot data center building with approximately 59 megawatts (MW) of power. Holder Construction Group LLC (Hendon, Virginia) is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to wrap up by the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Expansions also abound in the region. CoreSite Realty Corporation's (Denver, Colorado) Phase II expansion of its data center campus in Reston, Virginia, entails demolishing an existing structure and constructing a 240,000-square-foot, 36-MW data hall to provide regional colocation facilities and support. Construction is expected to be completed in the first half of 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The Maryland Port Administration (Baltimore, Maryland) is looking to allow increased cargo in the Port of Baltimore. The project involves deepening a container berth by 50 feet to allow the port to handle two supersized container ships simultaneously and up to 14,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs). Four cranes also will be installed. The $116.4 million project is set to kick off early in the quarter and take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
While automotive projects aren't as prevalent in the Mid-Atlantic region as the Great Lakes or Southeast regions, Industrial Info is tracking more than $600 million in upcoming project activity in the sector. Michelin Tire Corporation (Clermont-Ferrand, France) is planning expansions of two tire-manufacturing facilities in South Carolina. At an automobile tire plant in Greenville and a heavy truck tire-manufacturing plant in Spartanburg, new manufacturing equipment and machinery will be installed to increase manufacturing operations and plant efficiency at a combined estimated total investment of $175 million. Both projects are expected to be completed by the end of this year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project reports on the Greenville and Spartanburg projects.
Continental Structural Plastics Incorporated (Auburn Hills, Michigan) will be expanding its truck components manufacturing plant in Salisbury, North Carolina, by constructing a 50,000-square-foot building addition along with new paint and prime lines in order to increase production speeds and accommodate larger projects. Jenison Construction Incorporated (Charlotte, North Carolina) is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to wrap up by the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In other types of manufacturing, Crown Holdings Incorporated (Yardley, Pennsylvania) will be constructing a grassroot aluminum can manufacturing plant in Martinsville, Virginia. The project entails constructing a 355,000-square-foot building to give the company a new East Coast manufacturing operation. Construction is set to be completed by the end of the year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Plasser American Corporation (Chesapeake, Virginia) will be expanding its railway equipment assembly facilities in Chesapeake by constructing an 82,000-square-foot manufacturing building expansion and a three-story office building. Assembly and warehouse space also will be expanded, allowing the company to increase its production flow by more than 100%. The project is expected to be completed in the second half of next year. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
