Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--U.S. natural gas demand increased 43% from 2012 to 2022, driven by 116% growth in Louisiana and Texas, according to recent findings by the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). While growing demand for liquefied natural gas (LNG) feedstock drove activity along the Gulf Coast, where exports are a booming industry, increased gas-fired domestic generation was the second-most significant factor, which the EIA attributed to coal-to-gas switching and rising demand for air conditioning. Industrial Info is tracking about three dozen maintenance related-projects at U.S. gas-fired power plants that are set to kick off in the third quarter, most of which are set to begin in September.

The importance of proper maintenance at U.S. gas-fired power plants cannot be overstated. While most of the political energy surrounding the U.S energy market is in renewables, natural gas developers are emphasizing the fossil fuel's role as a "bridge" between the long-gone years of coal's dominance in the market, and the emerging role of wind, solar and other renewable sources. But this transition likely will cover decades, and gas-fired power plants will need to be consistently in their best condition to handle growing demand during that time. U.S. natural gas consumption in the power-generation sector increased almost every year for the last five years as summers have gotten warmer and air conditioners have gotten busier, according to the EIA. That's an especially big concern this summer in Texas, where an ongoing heat wave is shattering record temperatures on an almost daily basis. Two of the upcoming maintenance projects in the Lone Star State are NRG Energy Incorporated's (NYSE:NRG) (Houston, Texas) 25-day inspection and overhaul to its 171-MW Unit 2 at its power station in Gregory, Texas, and TexGen Power LLC's (Houston) 28-day inspection and overhaul to its 264-MW Unit 2 at its Wolf Hollow I Power Station in Granbury, Texas.
Turbines at the two facilities are manufactured by General Electric and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems (Houston), respectively. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Power Project Database can read detailed reports on the Gregory and Granbury projects.
Total natural gas demand in the Midwest grew 35% from 2012 to 2022, according to the EIA, because gas consumption in the power-generation sector more than doubled during this period. Associated Electric Cooperative Incorporated (AECI) (Springfield, Missouri) is gearing up for maintenance at two facilities in Missouri: the 289-MW Unit 1 at its Saint Francis Energy Facility in Campbell and the 104-MW Unit 2 at its Nodaway Power Plant in Conception Junction. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Campbell and Conception Junction projects.
In the U.S. Northeast, natural gas demand grew 36% between 2012 and 2022, according to the EIA, also driven by increased consumption in the electric power sector. Lakeside Hazleton LLC, a subsidiary of Starwood Capital Group (Miami Beach, Florida), is preparing for major inspections and any necessary repairs to units 1 to 4 at its power plant in Hazleton, Pennsylvania, which total 172 MW in output, while Vistra Energy Corporation (NYSE:VST) (Irving, Texas) is reviewing units 3 and 4 at its Sithe Independence Cogeneration Station in Oswego, New York. Subscribers can read detailed reports on the Hazleton and Oswego projects.
