Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. will see construction kickoffs for 19 transportation system projects worth $3.27 billion in June, including the second phase of a massive passenger rail program in Miami, Florida, and the third phase of a harbor dredging project in Savannah, Georgia, according to Industrial Info's Project Database.
The second phase of the 235-mile All Aboard Florida Miami-to-Orlando passenger rail system has a total investment value of $1.5 billion. With 190 miles of existing rail lines and 40 miles of new line, the 32-train-per-day system will stretch from downtown Miami to the Orlando airport, with stops in downtown Fort Lauderdale and downtown West Palm Beach. Passenger service will begin in 2017, according to the project's website. It is designed to move passengers from Miami to Orlando in three hours.
All Aboard Florida is working with the Greater Orlando Airport Authority as project partner. HNTB Corporation (Kansas City, Missouri) is providing construction management, and Moss & Associates (Fort Lauderdale) is general contractor. Also in June, the Georgia Port Authority, with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and Great Lakes Dredge & Dock, kicks off the third phase of a project to dredge and deepen 40 miles of the Savannah ship channel and harbor to 47 feet, from the present 42 feet. The operation is part of a 10-year, $706 million expansion. Completion is set for second-quarter 2018.
The project will allow the waterway to accommodate bigger freighters, following the expansion of the Panama Canal. For related information, see March 3, 2015 article - Work Begins on Georgia Harbor Expansion, Ironclad Recovery.
Coming in third in value is the $450 million Southport marine terminal addition by the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority. The project involves construction of a two-berth marine terminal, including a 2,128-foot marginal wharf, two 1,064-foot berths, a container yard, and six post-Panamax cranes. Delaware River Stevedores Incorporated (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and SSA Marine (Seattle, Washington) are at work on the addition.
