Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Southwest market region, which includes Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Texas, is showing strong activity in the Industrial Manufacturing sector for the upcoming fourth quarter. Projects in the region include port developments, data centers, distribution centers and more. Industrial Info is tracking more than $4.4 billion in medium- and high-probability (70-99% chance of kicking off as planned) Industrial Manufacturing projects that are set to kick off in the region in the fourth quarter.
Online shopping has been increasingly important during the COVID-19 pandemic, and the leader in e-commerce, Amazon.com Incorporated (NASDAQ:AMZN) (Seattle, Washington), is covering its bases in the Southwest with the planned construction of distribution centers in Texas and Louisiana. In El Paso, Texas, Amazon plans to construction a four-story, 2.8 million-square-foot facility that is expected to take about a year to complete. In Baton Rouge, Louisiana, Amazon will construct 1.1 million-square-foot fulfillment and distribution center to support regional operations. While the El Paso facility is a grassroot project, the Baton Rouge building will be constructed on a brownfield site, requiring increased time. For more information, see Industrial Info project reports on the El Paso and Baton Rouge projects.
Coupled with the increase in e-commerce is the rise of data centers, and in Texas, the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex seems to the hub of the data center sector. In Garland, Texas, about 15 miles northeast of Dallas, Digital Realty Trust Incorporated (San Francisco, California) is preparing to begin Phase I construction on a grassroot data center. The project entails constructing a 280,000-square-foot, 32-megawatt (MW) data hall for a proposed multi-phase, 1.4 million-square-foot, 160-MW facility. Construction is planned to kick off late this year and is anticipated to take about a year to complete. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
In nearby Fort Worth, Linear Labs Incorporated (Fort Worth) will be performing a major renovation to a plant that will develop electric motors. The 500,000-square-foot former airplane maintenance facility will be renovated with equipment and systems to accommodate the manufacture, research and development of advanced electric motors for the electric vehicle, HVAC and robotics markets. Construction is expected to kick off early in the fourth quarter and to be completed in early 2022. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
Among the region's largest projects in the sector is the expansion of a container terminal and distribution center at the Port of New Orleans, Louisiana. The expansion will be built on a 675-acre tract of undeveloped land and will help to accommodate the port's 4.5% annual growth rate and larger ships. The $1 billion project is set to begin by the end of this year and to be completed in late 2022. AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles, California) is a consultant on the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
The aviation sector also is playing a role in the region's project activity. Skydweller Aero Incorporated (Alexandria, Virginia) will construct a grassroot aircraft assembly and testing facility in Ardmore, Oklahoma. The 55,000-square-foot facility will enable the company to develop solutions for heavy payload capacity for a new class of unmanned aircraft. Construction is set to kick off by the end of this year and to be completed next summer. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
