Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--As universities expand, additional utility systems are needed to handle the added heating and cooling capacity for the new construction.
Industrial Info is currently tracking 51 active construction projects with a combined total investment value of $607 million for utility system expansions and upgrades at U.S. universities.
One of these projects is the $73 million campus utility system expansion being planned for the University of Colorado at Boulder. The university is planning to perform renovations to an existing cogeneration facility and will construct a new 75,000-square-foot conventional heating and cooling building that will include three or four natural gas-fired boilers totaling 400,000 pounds per hour, 4 to 5 centrifugal chillers with a total capacity of 6,000 to 9,000 tons and five or six 6-cell cooling towers. Site preparation started this month, and overall completion of the expansion is planned for 2014.
Industrial Info is also tracking the $67 million West Campus cogeneration facility expansion planned by the University of Wisconsin in Madison. The university is planning to expand its existing energy facility by constructing a 42,500-square-foot building and installing two 5,000-ton York centrifugal chillers, cooling towers and other supporting auxiliary equipment to increase its chilled water supply.
