Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--China has a population of 1.3 billion people. This figure is so large that it's almost difficult to comprehend...so think of it this way: one in five people in the world today are Chinese. China is about to become the country with the largest English-speaking population in the world. And next door is India.
Both countries are in Asia. Both countries have burgeoning middle classes. Like anywhere else in the world, the middle class demands infrastructure. This, and the focus of both countries' governments to modernize, has led to extremely rapid growth and an ensuing demand for raw materials.
In August 2009, Industrial Info opened its Asia Pacific Middle East (APME) office in Perth, Western Australia, in order to better report industrial development and to provide Living Forward information on and to the global market.
In today's "Navigating the Currents of Change," Daryl Street, Industrial Info's manager of Metals & Minerals Research for the Asia Pacific Middle East region, walks us through some of the incredible opportunities that exist and are taking shape in this part of Industrial Info's global coverage.
"Australia is booming," said Street. "At Industrial Info APME we are currently tracking almost 200 Metals & Minerals projects worth approximately $120 billion.
"In Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), we are tracking about $230 billion worth of projects, but the really staggering statistic here is that there are only about 40 of these LNG projects. They are just huge by any world standard and are being executed by the likes of Chevron and BHP Billiton. And that is just Australia."
Street went on to say that "Perth was a very clever choice of location for the APME office. If you take one time zone to the east of Perth and one time zone to the west, within that band resides 40% of the world's population. Naturally it includes Asia, where most of the economies are classified as 'Emerging,' which tends to translate as fast-growth economies."
In this interview, Street discusses why the worst of the global financial crisis missed Australia, gives the listener interesting insights into the APME region, and outlines who the major U.S. players are and what type of projects are being planned in this part of the world.
Mr. Street has worked in the resources industry for most of the past 20 years in the APME region. He has held business development roles, general management roles and was most recently a partner and executive director of a Perth-based, international project management company.
