Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--India's leading renewable power producer, Welspun Energy Limited (New Delhi), has commissioned three photovoltaic projects totaling 50 megawatts (MW) of capacity in Rajasthan. Welspun has won these three projects under the second batch of Phase I of India's Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission (JNNSM). Welspun bagged these projects, quoting a tariff of $0.15 per kilowatt-hour (kWh).
Developed in Bap village, in the Jodhpur district of Rajasthan, the three thin-film-based solar photovoltaic power plants are expected to generate a total of 90 million kWh of electricity in a year. The 50-MW projects are estimated to produce enough electricity to light up 250,000 homes. Further, according to the company, these renewable energy projects would help reduce carbon emissions by up to 78,000 tons annually.
As per the contract signed by the company with NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Limited (New Delhi), the nodal agency for JNNSM, these projects were slated for commissioning by the end of February 2013. The company achieved commissioning of all the three projects well ahead of schedule.
"We are pleased to bring this 15-MW solar project online much ahead of its schedule," said Vineet Mittal, the co-founder and managing director of Welspun Energy, on the commissioning of the first 15-MW project. "Strong integration of engineering design, technology and focused project management has helped us in achieving quality, time and cost superiority."
Welspun Energy is the energy arm of one of India's fastest-growing conglomerates, the $3.5 billion Welspun Group. The company had been operating 64 MW of solar power plants in Maharashtra and Gujarat prior to the commissioning of the new projects. Welspun Energy is developing more than 250 MW of solar and 800 MW of wind capacity in the states of Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Karnataka. The company has set a target to commission 1.7 gigawatts of solar and wind power projects across India by 2015.
