West Coast Wine Makers See Market for Increased Glass Bottle Manufacturing Capacity

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Citing shortages of domestic glass bottle supply and increasing imports from China and Mexico, the domestic wine making industry, especially West Coast vintners, envision the need for more glass making capacity. This, coupled with growing demand for wine bottled on the US West Coast from wine producing regions like the Napa Valley has led to the development of a number of new glass wine bottle manufacturing projects to supply this market.

The most recent announcement of a new glass wine bottle manufacturing plant comes from Bronco Wine Company (Ceres, California), which is studying the possibility of constructing a $200 million grassroot glass wine bottle manufacturing plant in Napa, California near an existing bottling plant.

Last year, Cameron Family Glass Packaging announced plans to build a new glass plant in Washington. The company is finalizing financing and hopes to begin construction this spring on an $80 million, grassroot glass wine bottle manufacturing plant at the Port of Kalama, Washington.

A third project planned in Oregon by Spinelli Vineyards to construct a wine bottle manufacturing plant in Boardman, Oregon, has been canceled due to lack of funding.

There are eight glass container manufacturing plants operating in the West Coast Region; six in California, one in Washington and one in Oregon. In Modesto, California, Gallo Glass Company operates a dedicated wine bottle manufacturing plant. Owens-Illinois Incorporated operates four of the plants. Saint-Gobain Container LLC operates the remaining three plants.
