Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 9-megawatt (MW) Twin Falls hydroelectric facility, located on the Wisconsin side of the Menominee River, began commercial operations this month.
The facility, owned by WEC Energy Group (Milwaukee, Wisconsin), was built to replace an aging hydro powerhouse that borders Wisconsin and the Upper Peninsula of Michigan on the Michigan side of the Menominee River. The Twin Falls dam was built in 1912 and is licensed to operate until 2040. Due to various needed repairs and upgrades to the original powerhouse, the new hydro powerhouse was built to address this growing concern. The powerhouse will utilize two Canadian Hydro Kaplan Turbine Generators to generate renewable power for the surrounding region.
The project had a total investment of $64 million and construction was managed by C R Meyer & Sons Incorporated (Oshkosh, Wisconsin) and Black & Veatch (Kansas City, Missouri). Black & Veatch was responsible for the design and engineering for the project, and C R Meyer & Sons was responsible for construction of the powerhouse, which took about two years.
The project employed up to 200 workers at the peak of construction, and has created permanent operating positions for the local community.
