Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--DONG Energy A/S (Fredericia, Denmark) has confirmed that work on the 258-megawatt (MW) Burbo Bank Extension offshore windfarm in the U.K. will kick-off in June.
In a community newsletter the company confirmed that the project, which is located eight kilometres (km) off the U.K.'s west coast in Liverpool Bay, will start with the installation of the export cable, offshore substation and turbine foundations. It will be the first windfarm in the world to use 8.0 MW wind turbines. Vestas Wind Systems A/S (Aarhus, Denmark) will supply 32 of its V164-8.0MW wind turbines with a total capacity of 258 MW. The windfarm will be capable of generating enough power for approximately 230,000 households when it is commissioned in the first half of next year.
The news comes in the same week that U.K. energy regulator, Ofgem, launched a tender to allow bidders to compete to own the transmission rights for the Burbo Bank Extension windfarm. The tender process for the Offshore Transmission Owner (OFTO) contract is valued at roughly £230 million ($327.5 million) and comprises an offshore substation platform, offshore and onshore AC export cables and an onshore substation.
In February, DONG sold a 50% stake in the project for £660 million ($940 million), with 25% going to Danish pension provider PKA (Hellerup) and another 25% to KIRKBI A/S (Billund), the parent company of the LEGO Group.
Jørgen Vig Knudstorp, president and chief executive officer of the LEGO Group, commented: "I am proud to announce our investment in the Burbo Bank Extension together with our partners DONG Energy and PKA. This investment is another substantial step for the LEGO Group towards balancing our global energy consumption with renewable energy capacity. Our goal is to fulfil this by 2020 and beyond as we want to make a positive impact on the planet our children will inherit-- primarily by providing great play experiences that inspire and develop children, but also through our commitment to the environment."
DONG and LEGO have some history in the power generation sector. Last year, Industrial Info reported on the companies officially commissioning their Borkum Riffgrund I offshore windfarm project in the German North Sea. The 312-MW windfarm was the first in Germany for the Danish energy company and the first large-scale energy project for LEGO. For additional information, see October 20, 2015, article--DONG, LEGO Build First German Windfarm.
