World's Largest Wind Turbines Fully Installed at Burbo Bank Project

A new era for offshore wind has begun as the first windfarm to use next generation 8-megawatt (MW) turbines has completed the installation phase in the U.K..

Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--A new era for offshore wind has begun as the first windfarm to use next generation 8-megawatt (MW) turbines has completed the installation phase in the U.K..

All 32 of the V164 8.0 MW turbines from MHI Vestas Wind Systems A/S (OMX:VWS) (Aarhus, Denmark), which are the largest wind turbines in world, have been installed at the Burbo Bank Extension, located eight kilometres (km) off the U.K.'s west coast in Liverpool Bay. The first turbine was installed in September. For additional information, see September 12, 2016, article--World's Largest Offshore Wind Turbine Installed in U.K..

The windfarm is being developed by DONG Energy A/S (Fredericia, Denmark) and will be capable of generating 258 MW of electricity, enough to power 230,000 households, when it is commissioned in the first half of next year.

"We are delighted at the completion of this major milestone in the project," explained Claus Bøjle Møller, project director at DONG Energy. "It follows on from first power generation in November. This is the first time the 8-MW turbines have been installed offshore, so it is an exciting time for the entire industry. By using more powerful turbines we are able to bring down the cost of providing clean, renewable energy to homes around the UK."

Before Christmas, it was confirmed that the 8-MW turbines will also be used at the 370-MW Norther project, the largest proposed offshore windfarm in Belgium. For additional information, see December 19, 2016, article--Mitsubishi Buys into Belgium's Largest Wind Project.

It has also been chosen by Europe's largest planned testing centre for next-generation offshore turbines, the European Offshore Wind Deployment Centre (EOWDC), off the coast of Aberdeen in Scotland. The EOWDC is being developed by Aberdeen Offshore Wind Farm Limited (AOWFL), a company set up by Swedish energy company Vattenfall AB (Stockholm), Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG) and Technip SA (EPA:TEC) (Paris, France). It will use 11 turbines, ranging from 4 to 10 MW in size. For additional information, see July 20, 2016, article--Giant 8-MW Turbines Picked for European Wind Testing Project.
