Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--On November 23, 2013, the cofferdam on the Maerdang Hydropower Station was removed, and water from the Yellow River began to run through the diversion tunnel. The 2,200-megawatt (MW) project achieved its initial river diversion and is ready to be cut off from the mainstream soon, according to an announcement from Sinohydro Engineering Bureau 3 Company Limited (Xian, Shaanxi), the construction contractor, on November 25.

The diversion tunnel work on the Maerdang Hydropower Station kicked off in March 2012 and was accepted on November 19, 2013. Per the requirements of the project owner, the Northwest Branch of Sinohydro Bureau 3 immediately began preparations for river diversions. The project reached initial river diversion on November 23. Presently, Sinohydro Bureau 3 is working on the preparation of materials, such as concrete blocks, rebar cages and various types of construction vehicles required for the cut-off from the mainstream.

The Maerdang Hydropower Station, located at in the Qinghai province, is the 12th cascade hydropower project planned on the river section from Hukou to Yangqu on the mainstream of the Yellow River. The project mainly comprises a concrete face rockfill dam, a right-bank discharge tunnel, a right-bank spillway and a right-bank underground powerhouse, which is to be furnished with four Francis-type hydraulic turbine generating units, each of 550 MW.

Sinohydro Bureau 3 is mainly responsible for the mainstream river diversion, as well as associated cofferdam works; the diversion tunnel, as well as left-bank concrete slope protection works; the right-bank access road works; and the access road for the diversion tunnel, as well as exit excavation and support works.
