Ashta Chemicals is Planning Major Investment for a Grassroot Plant in Arkansas

Ashta Chemicals Incorporated (Ashtabula, Ohio) recently announced plans to add a second chlor-alkali plant to its family, with a grassroot plant to be located in El Dorado, Arkansas. Although plans are preliminary this plant will have an estimated production capacity of 35,000 metric tons per year of chlorine using membrane cell technology, and will also produce potassium hydroxide (KOH).

Ashta Chemical expects to select an engineering and construction firm from a short list during the second quarter of 2005. Construction for this estimated $30 million plant is tentatively planned to begin this fall, with commercial operation beginning in early 2007. Much of the product from this plant will be provided to Great Lakes Chemical Corporation's (West Lafayette, Indiana) neighboring bromine chemicals plant under a long-term supply agreement.
