Alternative Fuel Industry Leads First Quarter 2007 Planned Project Spending in Illinois and Missouri

In a trend that is indicative of activity throughout heavy corn farming states in the U.S., the Alternative Fuels Industry leads all other industries for planned first quarter 2007 project spending with almost $1.4 billion in planned first quarter construction starts in Illinois and Missouri. The nine grassroot ethanol and biodiesel projects scheduled to begin construction during the first quarter account for 35% of the planned project spending in Illinois and Missouri during the first quarter.

All in all, there are 98 industrial capital and maintenance projects currently scheduled to begin construction during the first quarter of 2007 in Illinois and Missouri. These projects represent just under $4 billion in spending.

Both Illinois and Missouri have a large industrial plant population and share major waterway transportation infrastructure afforded by the Mississippi River and Great Lakes, which the states natural locations for industrial facilities, plants, and mines that require transportation hubs to export markets.

After Alternative Fuels, the Industrial Manufacturing Industry is second with more than $1.1 billion in project activity from 20 projects. The majority of this spending is planned for a retooling of DaimlerChrysler Corporation’s North and South Minivan Assembly Plants in Saint Louis, Missouri, which will cost around $1 billion.

The Power Industry follows with 29 projects totaling $850 million. Projects include everything from new windfarm construction to planned power plant outages for maintenance repair and overhaul.
