Written by Martin Lynch, European News Editor for Industrial Info (Galway, Ireland)--AMEC Foster Wheeler PLC (NYSE:AMFW) (London, England) has landed a U.K. framework agreement to provide engineering consultancy services for the Coal, Gas and Renewables (CGR) division of EDF Energy.
The deal will see AMEC working on the Cottam and West Burton A coal-fired plants and the West Burton B combined cycle gas turbine (CCGT) plant. The company will also support EDF Energy Renewables' growing portfolio of U.K. windfarms, which have a combined generating capacity of up to 598 megawatts (MW) and can power roughly 346,000 homes. The value of the contract was not revealed.
AMEC said that the deal "has a broad spectrum," and will cover operations and maintenance, outage support, technical services, plant modifications and enhancements, new build and decommissioning.
"Our role is to deploy our technical capacity and capability to improve EDF Energy's operational and commercial performance at all levels and support its aims and objectives for safe, reliable operation," explained Dawn James, Vice President for Generation Services at AMEC Foster Wheeler's Clean Energy business. "This award enables us to build on the capability and services that we have brought to EDF Energy's nuclear fleet for many years. We aim to become a key partner to EDF Energy's Coal, Gas and Renewables business by providing high quality, cost-effective solutions to their challenges."
The technical programmes covered by the agreement include: pressure systems management; steam turbines and turbo alternator plant; electrical plant management; civil engineering requirements; gas turbine plant; control efficiency, performance and reliability management; gas storage and gas supply systems; wind turbines and windfarm management; and project management.
EDF Energy is the U.K. arm of French power major Électricité de France SA (EPA:EDF) (Paris, France), which is spearheading the U.K.'s drive to kick-off a new era for nuclear power with its permitted Hinkley Point C project. Last year, EDF contracted AMEC Foster Wheeler to provide project management services to all of its existing U.K. nuclear power stations, as well as its U.K. technical offices in a deal spanning up to nine years. In August, Industrial Info reported that AMEC was also awarded a continuation of contract to provide environmental support for the largest proposed nuclear power station in the U.K, the 3.8 gigawatt (GW) Moorside nuclear project in Cumbria.
