Cemig to Begin Construction on Solar Photovoltaic Plant in January 2012

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Brazilian power utility firm La Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais S.A. (NYSE:CIG) (Cemig) (Belo Horizonte, Brazil) will begin construction of a 3-megawatt (MW) pilot solar photovoltaic plant in the city of Sete Lagoas, Minas Gerais, in January 2012. The investment for this project will be 40 million reais, or about US$22.46 million, and it is expected to begin commercial operations in May 2012.

The project is under the frame of Cemig's program for research and development (R&D). Cemig is working on this program with research centers, universities, and technology providers. The main objective is to improve service performance by developing new technologies that will be applied to power generation, transmission and distribution.

The plant will be built in an area of eight hectares and will be the first solar photovoltaic facility connected to the grid in Minas Gerais.

The project will be developed by Cemig in partnership with Solaria Brazil (Sao Paulo, Brazil), which is a manufacturer of photovoltaic panels; Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa de Minas Gerais (Fapemig); and the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG).
