Researched by Industrial Info Resources Australia (Perth, Australia)--Two major underground coal mines owned and operated by Centennial Coal Company Limited (ASX:CEY) (Sydney, New South Wales) are due to have their mine lives extended. Their final permissible operating dates currently are at the end of this year.
For some time, Centennial Coal has been preparing to kick-off major extensions at its Springvale Colliery and Angus Place sites, which are located near Lithgow and Lidsdale, respectively, in New South Wales. It is expected that both projects will help to provide a variety of jobs in the area.
Current development consent for the Springfield Colliery venture is due to expire sometime between September and October of this year, with Centennial Coal seeking a renewal to continue mining beyond that date. Ideally, mining operations will continue at the site using longwall mining techniques, while major contractors are brought in to extend the mining area east, southeast and southwest of the existing Springvale Colliery position. This will incorporate the development of further underground access headings and roadways to improve mine access to the proposed areas.
Sources confirm that the projects will extend the Springfield Colliery's mine life by approximately 13 years. Employees at the mine called for celebrations this year, having been in production for more than two decades.
In nearby Lidsdale, not far from the Springfield Colliery, Centennial Coal is seeking approval to extend its underground mining operations at the Angus Place beyond 2016. The approval will involve government permission to mine to the east of the current mine's operational sphere. Although there will be no increase in the mine's total coal extraction capacity, Centennial Coal is proposing to construct and upgrade new and existing infrastructure to accommodate the latest operations. This project will undoubtedly extend the life of the mine by more than 25 years.
Coal extracted from the area is transferred by overland conveyor to the Mt. Piper and Wallerawang power stations, or processed for export at Centennial's Western Main facility. Recently, the majority of coal produced has been transported by train to Port Kembla for export to overseas markets.
