China's Environmental Ministry Clears Three Major Coal-Fired Projects in Guandong

Researched by Industrial Info Resources China (Beijing, China)--The Ministry of Environmental Protection (MEP) approved environment impact assessment (EIA) reports for three large-scale, coal-fired power projects in Guangdong. The three projects have a total installed capacity of 5,320 megawatts (MW), and will replace small, coal-fired units with a total capacity of 1,940 MW, according to the MEP, which accepted the reports in January.

The three projects include Guangdong Datang International Leizhou Power Company Limited's (Hohhot, Inner Mongolia) 2,000-MW, coal-fired Leizhou Power Plant project; China Resources Power Holdings Limited's (Hong Kong) 1,320-MW, coal-fired Xijiang Power Plant project; and Guangdong Baolihua New Energy Stock Company Limited's (Guangzhou, Guangdong) 2,000-MW, grassroot, coal-fired Lufeng Jiahuwan Power Plant project.

According to the MEP, both the Datang Leizhou Power Plant and China Resources Xijiang Power Plant, located in the western part of Guangdong province, will replace small units with larger ones. The Datang Leizhou Power Plant will be furnished with two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired steam turbines units, and will replace small coal-fired units with a total capacity of 1,296 MW. The China Resources Xijiang Power Plant will be furnished with two 660-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired steam turbines units and will replace small coal-fired units with a total capacity of 648 MW. The Lufeng Jiahuwan Power Plant, located at Shanwei in Lufeng City, will be furnished with two 1,000-MW, ultra-supercritical, coal-fired steam turbine units.

All three projects are scheduled to begin operations in 2015-16. The power units will consume 12.64 million metric tons of coal each year. Guangdong is the seventh-largest coal consumer in China. More than 65% of its total coal consumption is used for power generation. Coal-sourced power accounts for about 80% of the total power generation output in Guangdong.
