Reported by Annette Kreuger, Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--There is big money to be made, and spent, when it comes to the life science industry. Even before citizens reap the hoped-for alleviation or cure of a medical condition courtesy of its products, the North American life science industry delivered $16 billion into completing 1,241 projects in 2017. The healthy injections of cash that the industry pours into local economies, both during the construction of and long after completion, is what makes these industry projects so attractive to every region.

Offering a range of investments as diverse as the industry itself, a recent survey of reported projects in Industrial Info's Pharmaceutical Online Database reveals that, cumulatively, the projects deliver an average total investment value (TIV) of $13 million. Completion schedules are one of the few similarities the projects share, as they run the gamut from regularly scheduled maintenance projects to massive new research laboratories. Sources for the 2017 activity include industry, commercial developers, institutions and universities. The projects reported involve grassroot facilities, major building additions to existing sites, and in-plant capital. The projects are a varied group in both size and focus.

The biggest project to make it to completion in 2017 was the $800 million U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) Replacement Facility at Fort Detrick, Frederick, Maryland. USAMRIID, the U.S. Army's branch for defensive research to combat biological warfare, is the only U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) laboratory equipped with Biosafety Level-4 (BSL4) capabilities.

First reported by Industrial Info in 2006, the new lab's capacity will allow for expanded research into the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of such threats as anthrax, the West Nile virus and Ebola hemorrhagic fever, which lack effective drugs or vaccines and can become a virtual death sentence for those infected. USAMRIID also plays a critical role in the status of the country's emergency preparedness.

Planned as the largest, most complex biocontainment facility in the world, the six-story, 835,000-square-foot LEED Silver building is an essential component of the National Interagency Biodefense Campus, located within Fort Detrick. Designed under a joint venture of CUH2A (acquired by HDR Incorporated (Omaha, Nebraska) in 2008) and Smith Carter Architects and Engineers Incorporated (Winnipeg, Canada), the project was built by the joint-venture team of Manhattan Construction Company (Washington, D.C.) and Torcon Incorporated (Red Bank, New Jersey). For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

On its 500,000-square-foot Oceanside, California, campus, Genentech (South San Francisco, California) (a member of Roche USA) finished the massive $180 million P2 downstream purification upfit project. With Fluor Corporation (NYSE:FLR) (Irving, Texas)and Jacobs Engineering Group Incorporated (NYSE:JEC) (Dallas, Texas) on the job, the company expanded downstream (purification) processing capacity of biological therapeutics. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Elanco Animal Health (Greenfield, Indiana) wrapped up construction on a $150 million expansion/upfit project series at its 35,000-square-foot bovine-injectables plant in August, Georgia. With a team consisting of CRB Consulting Engineers (Cary, North Carolina) and McCarthy Building Companies Incorporated (Atlanta, Georgia), the company made a number of improvements, including a Microlab Isolator Suite addition, production equipment additions and a 40,000-square-foot building expansion to increase laboratory and production capacity of bovine hormone injectables and other related products.
