Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Projects related to environmental, social and governance (ESG) goals are on the rise across the U.S., and California is no exception. California is home to billions' worth of ESG projects under construction, with nearly all of the activity attributed to the Pharmaceutical-Biotech, Power and Alternative Fuel industries.
ESG activity in the Pharma-Bio Industry is buoyed by adherence to Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) guidelines that ensure facilities are built with a multitude of "green" features. According to the U.S. Green Building Council, which sets the LEED certification program, LEED buildings "use less energy and water, utilize renewable energy and fewer resources, create less waste, and preserve land and habitat."
Pharmaceutical giant Bristol-Myers Squibb Company (NYSE:BMY) (New York, New York) is building a $500 million grassroot biologics research and development (R&D) facility in San Diego, which will feature a 430,000-square-foot LEED Gold building equipped for the R&D of novel biologics and therapeutics. Construction of the facility, which is on the site of a campus owned by Alexandria Real Estate Equities (NYSE:ARE) (Pasadena, California), is expected to wrap up around the end of 2026. Subscribers to Industrial Info's Global Market Intelligence (GMI) Pharmaceutical-Biotech Industry Project Database can click here to read a detailed project report.
In a press release announcing the project, the real estate developer said, "In targeting LEED® Gold certification for BMS's new development, Alexandria continues to undertake strategic measures to increase energy efficiencies, mitigate carbon emissions, improve redundancy of systems and remove demanding operational requirements from its tenants through a state-of-the-art central plant."
Meanwhile, Genentech (South San Francisco, California), a subsidiary of Switzerland's Roche (Basel), is adding an 84,000-square-foot LEED Gold building at its biologics facility in Oceanside, for the clinical-scale production of bulk biological drug substances. General contractor DPR Construction Incorporated (Redwood City, California) expects construction of the $280 million project will wrap up in mid-2025. Click here to read the project report.
Other projects related to ESG involve the proliferation of renewable energy and production of renewable fuels.
California's renewable-generation projects underway include the development of solar power and battery-energy storage systems (BESS). AES Corporation (NYSE:AES) (Arlington, Virginia) is at work on the first phase of its Bellefield solar-plus-storage facility in California City, about 70 miles north of Los Angeles. It comprises a $530 million solar plant, which is expected to generate 500 megawatts (MW) from photovoltaic (PV) panels, and a 500-MW, $500 million BESS addition that is designed to utilize lithium-ion technology. Construction kicked off in June and is expected to wrap up around the end of 2025. Subscribers can read more on the solar and BESS portions.
For more information on BESS development across California, see August 20, 2024, article - California Embraces BESS as Lights Stay on Amid Record Heat.
Meanwhile, Industrial Info is tracking four projects totaling $4 billion underway in California's Alternative Fuels Industry. This includes $2 billion worth of activity at World Energy LLC's (Boston, Massachusetts) refinery in Paramount. A $1 billion modernization and expansion project will allow the refinery to process only renewable feedstocks, while a $1 billion sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) unit addition will increase its production from 42 million to 340 million gallons per year. SAF is produced from agricultural and waste feedstocks and is consumed in blends with petroleum jet fuel.
The expansion is expected to wrap up in early 2025, and the SAF unit addition in early 2026.
