Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Engie S.A. (Paris, France) continues to expand its role in the North American renewables market. Engie's North American subsidiary recently acquired 33 active projects from Belltown Power (London, England), including 2.7 gigawatts (GW) of solar and 2.6 GW of stand-alone battery storage. The solar projects are paired with 700,000 megawatts (MW) of battery storage, and all projects to be purchased are in various phases of development. Industrial Info is tracking more than $5 billion worth of active Engie projects in the U.S. alone.
While most of Belltown Power's active projects are in the U.K., its U.S. subsidiary has proposed several projects in Texas, including the 180-MW Arroyo Solar Plant in Rio Hondo. The facility is designed to use 68 photovoltaic (PV) panels from SunPower Corporation (NASDAQ:SPWR) (San Jose, California), but it remains in an early study phase, where plenty of factors could alter or eliminate proposed investment.

Other proposed projects from Belltown include a pair of battery energy-storage system (BESS) projects in northern Texas: the 257.72-MW Tanzanite BESS near Athens and the 202.15-MW Turquoise BESS near Quinlan, which are in their early design and permitting phases. Both facilities will use batteries developed by Sungrow Power (Hefei, China). "The mix of solar, paired and stand-alone storage across a wide set of geographies both complements our existing portfolio, as well as provides opportunities for expansion into new areas in the United States," said Dave Carroll, the chief renewables officer for ENGIE North America, in a press release. "The 3.3 GW of battery-storage projects will be a critical enabler of flexibility, and supports the balance of the grid to improve its reliability and resilience."
The acquisition is the latest feather in Engie's North American renewables cap. Engie already has 3.9 GW of installed, fully operational renewable capacity in the U.S. and Canada, and more than $5 billion worth of active project developments in the U.S., including nearly $1.25 billion worth nearing or under construction.

Two of Engie's largest solar projects under construction can be found in Virginia: The 70-MW Powell's Creek Solar Plant in Alton and the 51-MW Sunnybrook Solar Plant in Scottsburg. Both are expected to use PV panels developed by Canadian Solar Incorporated (NASDAQ:CSIQ) (Guelph, Ontario). Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's project reports on Powell's Creek and Sunnybrook.
Canadian Solar announced in May it is planning to expand its production capacity in the coming years, growing its sales volumes by a compound annual growth rate of about 50% to 2026. For more information, see May 26, 2022, article - Canadian Solar Eyes Major Solar Power Expansions.
Even before its acquisition of Belltown's U.S. assets, Engie already had a series of active renewable-energy projects across Texas, including the Century Oak Wind Facility near Baird. The windfarm project, which is expected to begin construction before the end of the year, is expected to generate 150 MW from 46 turbines made by General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Boston, Massachusetts). Subscribers can learn more from Industrial Info's project report.
Last year, Belltown sold 460 MW of in-development solar projects across the U.S. to Competitive Power Ventures Incorporated (Braintree, Massachusetts).
