Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The U.S. Great Lakes region is preparing for $19.5 billion in project starts from July through December this year. The Great Lakes region includes the states of Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. Two natural gas-fired power projects add more than $2 billion to the region's planned project starts in the second half of the year. Advanced Power Services (NS) Incorporated (Boston, Massachusetts) is planning to kick off construction of the $1.1 billion South Field Energy Center in Wellsville, Ohio, in the fourth quarter of this year. The combined-cycle facility will have a generating capacity of 1,100 megawatts (MW), using two 346-MW General Electric (NYSE:GE) (GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) turbine-generators and two 204-ME GE steam combustion turbine-generators. Bechtel Power Corporation (Frederick, Maryland) is acting as engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor on the $1.1 billion project, which is expected to be completed in the summer of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Indeck Niles LLC (Niles, Michigan) is planning construction of a 1,076-MW combined-cycle facility in Niles, Michigan, in the fourth quarter of this year. The $1 billion facility also will use GE equipment. AECOM (NYSE:ACM) (Los Angeles, California) is acting as EPC firm on the project, which is expected to be completed in the first quarter of 2020. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Wind power also features heavily in the region's spending. Industrial Info is tracking $1.9 billion in planned wind project kickoffs in the Great Lakes region in the second half of 2017. Among the top wind projects is Invenergy LLC's (Chicago, Illinois) planned 271.4-MW windfarm in Dunkirk, Ohio. On a 19,000-acre site, the project will employ 118 2.3-MW wind turbine-generator sets, with balance-of-plant equipment and transmission lines. The project is set for completion in the fourth quarter of 2018. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Michigan has long been known as the seat of the U.S. automotive sector, and Ford Motor Company (NYSE:F) (Dearborn, Michigan) continues this legacy with the expansion of its automotive assembly plant in Flat Rock, Michigan. The expansion helps make Ford a frontrunner in cutting-edge automobile technology, as it will be for the production of high-tech autonomous and electric vehicles. The electric vehicles are expected to have a 300-mile range. The autonomous vehicles are designed with ride-sharing companies in mind. The project, which remains in the planning stage, has an estimated total investment value of $700 million and is expected to be completed by the end of 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

Like most regions, commuter rail projects also feature in the region's planned project kickoffs. In Chicago, the Chicago Transit Authority continues with planning for Phase I of its Red-Purple Line bypass addition. The project is planned to increase the efficiency of all Red, Purple and Brown Line trains in the city, providing a dedicated Brown Line track. In addition to the track bypass, the $320 million project requires new bridges and viaducts, and electrical and signal upgrades. The project is planned to kick off this summer and be completed in 2020. T.Y. Lin International Group (Chicago) is acting as design-engineering firm on the project. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.

While the Food & Beverage Industry may not have as many blockbuster projects as other industries, the 210 projects being tracked by Industrial Info give it the third-highest value for second-half 2017 project starts in the Great Lakes market region. Among the top Food & Beverage projects being tracked by Industrial Info in the region is a $400 million cheese and whey processing plant near Lansing, Michigan, by Glanbia Nutritionals plc (Kilkenny, Ireland). The facility will produce approximately 220 million pounds of cheese per year. Shambaugh & Son LP (Fort Wayne, Indiana) is acting as design-build firm on the project, which is expected to kick off by the end of the year and be completed in late 2019. For more information, see Industrial Info's project report.
