Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Canadian ports manage $400 billion worth of cargo every year, supporting thousands of jobs from coast to coast. As trade continues to grow, many ports are making large capital investments to expand docks, equipment, facilities and intermodal connections. Industrial Info is eight large port projects in Canada totaling $3.87 billion.

In British Columbia, a $550 million container terminal is being constructed at the Prince Rupert Ridley Island Terminal to increase capacity to handle 2 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) per year. Construction is anticipated to begin in the early fall of 2017 and is anticipated to be complete in early 2019.

Also in Prince Rupert, a $200 million Phase II container terminal expansion is occurring at the Fairview Container Terminal, which entails construction of a second deep-water berth and the installation of four additional gantry cranes and rail track to increase capacity to 1.3 million TEUs per year. Construction began in the spring of 2015 and is anticipated to be completed in the summer of 2017. The $400 million Phase III of the project will extend the wharf to 800 meters, achieve 59 feet water depth, and increase the dock area to 139 acres. The port's storage capacity will be 28,560 TEUs. Construction of this phase of the project is anticipated to begin in summer of 2018 and be wrapped up in the spring of 2020.

The $320 million Vancouver Centerm Container Terminal expansion entails a westward extension of the terminal container storage yard, extension of the rail yard, rehabilitation of the historic Ballantyne Pier and reconfiguration of the container yard to increase capacity to 1.5 million TEUs. Construction is anticipated to begin in early 2017 and planned to be completed in winter 2019.

The $1.45 billion Vancouver Roberts Bank Terminal 2 addition entails construction of a three-berth container terminal at Roberts Bank, next to existing terminals, the widening of existing causeways and expansion of the tug basin to increase container capacity to 2.4 million TEUs per year. Construction is anticipated to begin in early spring 2018 and be completed in summer 2023.

In New Brunswick, the $205 million Saint John West Side Waterfront Port upgrade and expansion will add larger cranes and change roadways, structures and rail services to increase port capacity. Construction is anticipated to begin in fall of 2016 with completion in winter of 2022.

In Nova Scotia, construction of the $425 million Guysborough grassroot container terminal entails a new container terminal and installation of equipment to handle 1.5 million TEUs per year. Construction is anticipated to begin in the fall of 2016 with completion in early 2018.

In Quebec, the $320 million Montreal Contrecoeur port terminal expansion will involve constructing a 675-meter dock for two berths, a track classification yard, an intermodal rail yard and access roads to expand port capacity. Construction is planned to begin in early 2018 and be completed in early 2021.
