Day & Zimmermann will handle the balance of plant work, which will consist of buildings, cooling water systems, and locks and gates. General Electric (NYSE:GE) (Fairfield, Connecticut) will handle the turbine and generator. Officials say that that the outage will be about month long, and employees at the facility already have started pulling rods in preparation.
The 607-megawatt (MW) Duane Arnold Nuclear Energy Center was built in 1975. It features a 600-MW GE steam turbine generator, with a GE Hitachi boiling water reactor boiler and two 2.8-MW Fairbanks Morse internal combustion engines. The plant generates enough power to supply more than 600,000 homes and businesses in Iowa.
